When you start with a portrait
and search for a pure form, a clear
volume, through successive eliminations,
you arrive inevitably at the egg.
Likewise, starting with the egg and
following the same process in reverse,
one finishes with the portrait.
- Pablo Picasso

From the Artist
About the Shmortraits series:
A shmortrait on a personality is my attempt at making sea glass. I slightly erode the metaphorical surface of a photograph to exploit the beauty within each subject. Each piece derives from a snapshot: some are close friends, some strangers, but each with intricacies, and humor, and beauty. I imagined I saw something of a personal state of harmony in each subject. Yet how can we know, after all, the inner workings of someone else, intimate, familiar, or the perfect stranger? Still I see a shine in these subjects, and so these pieces are each translations of that shine.
Most originals are for sale. Contact the artist, Diane Julia, for more information.
